Water metabolism after cardiac operations involving a Gibbon-type pump-oxygenator. II. Benign forms of water loss.

چکیده
Daily water metabolism of 21 patients was studied for 3 days after intracardiac surgery and whole-body perfusion. The average obligatory water losses of these patients were approximatelv 500, 750, and 750 ml. per 1\I3 of body surface per day on the first, second, and third postoperative day, respectively. A simple system, which combines knowledge of the estimated postoperative water requirement with the known daily change in body weight, was devised to manage accurately water metabolism after intracardiac surgery.

Variations in the Circuit of a Pump-oxygenator.
S INCE THE ADVENT OF OPEN-HEART SURgery , surgeons and pump-oxygenator technicians have striven to niake their work more simple, yet remain within safe boundaries. The purpose of this paper is to present two details we have adopted in our pump-oxygenator circuit. In many pump-oxygenators, the venous blood from the patient is returned to the top of a venous reservoir where it then falls down int...
متن کاملFifty years of open-heart surgery.
On May 6th, 2003, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first successful open-heart operation performed with the use of the heart-lung machine, one of the most important forms of therapy in the history of cardiac disease. On that spring day in Philadelphia, John H. Gibbon, Jr, MD, of the Jefferson University Medical Center, using total cardiopulmonary bypass for 26 minutes, closed a large se...
متن کاملStudies in extracorporeal circulation. I. Applicability of Gibbon-type pump-oxygenator to human intracardiac surgery: 40 cases.
BASIC laboratory studies on the extracorporeal circulation and oxygenation of blood began many years ago. In 1939, Gibbon 11 reported his pioneering work with perfusion of the entire body during the temporary functional exclusion of the heart and lungs from the remainder of the circulation. Since then, investigative work has progressed along many lines, one of which has been directed toward the...
متن کاملAPROTININ: EFFECTS ON BLOOD LOSS AND FRESH FROZEN PLASMA REQUIREMENT IN CARDIAC OPERATIONS
ABSTRACT Background: Aprotinin has been used increasingly to reduce postoperative blood loss in open-heart operations due to the potentialities for complications and high cost, it would seem reasonable to use aprotinin more selectively in small doses in the prime solution of the pump. Methods: We prospectively studied the effect of preoperative low dose aprotinin [2 million units (230mg)] on b...
متن کاملOptical Opacity of Laser Induced Plasma in Distilled Water with NaCl and TiO2 Nanoparticles Impurities
In this paper, the dynamic behavior of laser induced optical breakdown in impure water was studied by using a pump- probe technique. The plasma was induced by a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser pulse (with pulse duration ~10 ns) in distilled water with two types of impurities: (I) a solution (highly diluted salt water as a conductor) and (II) a colloidal (TiO2 in colloidal nanoparticle form as a dielectric...
